About Domain Names
Domain names are the names that are used to identify a particular website
on the internet.
i.e. http://www.its-the-bis.co.uk (for ease of use
we ignore the http:// bit).
These names also form the business part of an email (see below) address.
i.e. davidgale@its-the-bis.co.uk
The extension, the bit after the dot - .co.uk - forms part of the name
and so it is possible to have several versions of a name.
i.e. www.its-the-bis.com - www.its-the-bis.net
Domain names are unique and can only be registered once.
If you buy a name no one else can use it.
About Emails - All
Domain Names come with unlimited Email Addresses.
You will find companies offering cheap or even free (look
for the catch) Domain Names
(www.cheapname.co.uk). They may offer email and web forwarding.
(Make sure you know what is included or you
may find the cheap option isn't so cheap as it first appears.)
This means that they will automatically forward any emails addressed
to anyone@cheapname.co.uk to any email address that you designate.
i.e. joebloggs@tesco.net.
If you know how, you can configure your mail software - i.e. outlook
express - to pretend that joebloggs@tesco.net is in fact anyone@cheapname.co.uk
The combination of the forwarding arrangements and the quality of the
server hosting www.cheapname.co.uk, may result in a delay in the delivery
of your emails.
About
POP3 Mail Boxes
-All POP3 Boxes are email addresses but all email
address are not POP3 Boxes
Think of named pigeon holes in a mail sorting room where post for that
name, or other names i.e. management, is left for collection and you
are thinking of the manual equivalent of an email named POP3 Mail Box.
In the example above, joebloggs@tesco.net is
a named POP3 Mail Box whilst; anyone@cheapname.co.uk is
not.
Your mail software will enable you to collect the mail from each of
your POP3 Mail Boxes directly without the sort of delay that can be
associated with mail forwarding.
POP3 Mail Boxes
can provide many possibilities for handling and filtering email traffic.
i.e. You may be advertising in several newspapers - use a different
POP3 email address for each advert. If the email address is unique to
the advert, then you know that any emails result from that advert. This
knowledge will assist you in allocating advertising resources.
Junk emails coming to one of your email addresses. Consider reconfiguring
the box.
